ABC&#8217;s of Safe Sleep is an easy way to remember how to help newborns and infants sleep safely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">An example of what a safe sleep environment looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-04\/Safe_to_Sleep_brochure.pdf\">can be seen here<\/a>&nbsp;on the National Institute of Health\u2019s website. A good summary however is to also remember the ABC\u2019s of Safe Sleep:<strong> A<\/strong>lone, <strong>B<\/strong>ack, <strong>C<\/strong>rib.  Let&#8217;s break down each of the ABC&#8217;s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-regular-font-size\">Alone <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>It&#8217;s recommended that baby share a room but not a bed with parents for the first year of life. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">No toys, pillows, blankets, crib bumpers or other loose items should be in baby&#8217;s crib.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Once baby is rolling over or taking off their swaddle blanket, it&#8217;s time to remove the swaddle blanket, or exchange it for a sleep suit that will keep baby warm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-regular-font-size\">Back<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Put baby to sleep on their back, also called the supine position, for sleep. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">If baby falls asleep in a carseat or stroller, it&#8217;s okay to stay there<a href=\"https:\/\/letmommysleep.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/23\/updated-june-7-2021-safe-sleep-baby-after-cpsc-ban-inclined-sleepers-consumer\/\"> fo<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/child-safety\/okay-for-babies-to-sleep-in-car-seats-a1715398377\/\">r short stretches<\/a>.  Place the carseat in an area where you can observe, or ideally put baby in the crib.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-regular-font-size\">Crib<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">The terms &#8220;crib&#8221; and &#8220;bassinet&#8221; are regulated terms meaning that in order for a product to use those terms they must meet strict safety standards.  Baby <a href=\"https:\/\/letmommysleep.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/23\/updated-june-7-2021-safe-sleep-baby-after-cpsc-ban-inclined-sleepers-consumer\/\">should not<\/a> sleep in products called infant swings, beds, sleepers, napper or couch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">A crib with a flat, firm mattress should be used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Use a properly fitted sheet on the mattress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">And one last tip -as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationwidechildrens.org\/family-resources-education\/700childrens\/2014\/09\/the-abcs-of-safe-sleep\">NationwideChildrens.org<\/a>&nbsp;reminds us the &#8220;S&#8221; in ABC&#8217;S can stand for smoking&#8230;newborns &#8220;exposed to smoking, either while in the womb or after birth, have a higher risk of SIDS than infants who have not&nbsp;been exposed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"458\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/letmommysleep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ABCs-of-Safe-Sleep.png\" alt=\"ABC's of Safe Sleep\" class=\"wp-image-4408\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7951388888888888;width:400px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/letmommysleep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ABCs-of-Safe-Sleep.png 458w, https:\/\/letmommysleep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ABCs-of-Safe-Sleep-239x300.png 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the Back to Sleep&nbsp;campaign began in 1994, it has become widely known that babies sleeping on their backs instead of their bellies helps reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome&nbsp;(SIDS).
